In an age of answers, learn to ask better questions, think critically and gain career-ready communication and leadership skills.

CSUN’s M.A. in Humanities program has a simple but profound premise: before we can understand the world, we must first understand ourselves, the cultures and communities that shape us, and the ideas that govern what we believe to be true.

Designed for those with wide-ranging interests, including education, cultural studies, arts, business and communications, our program expands graduates’ options for further study and career development, offering a flexible path to greater meaning, innovation and lifelong learning.

M.A. in Humanities graduates bring high-level analytical skills, deeper questioning and stronger understanding to their work and lives.

Our students develop the habits of mind to adapt and thrive in any professional context—an invaluable asset in rapidly changing workplaces, where employers increasingly seek candidates who can navigate complex challenges and lead with perspective.

During 20 months of study, you’ll discuss and reflect on humanity’s “big ideas” with a dedicated cohort of fellow learners.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced: Each course builds on the last for a powerful, cumulative learning experience that synthesizes the best of human wisdom from a broad range of fields, including history, philosophy, ethics, law and religion.

You'll learn how to:

  • Think more logically
  • Communicate clearly and effectively
  • Analyze and synthesize problems
  • Respond appropriately to challenges of any kind
